The National Security
Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, recently inaugurated a 25-member National Census Security
and Logistics Committee to oversee the forthcoming population and housing
census in the country. The committee comprises representatives from the
military, paramilitary, police force, various ministries, unions, and the
Central Bank of Nigeria.
The committee's primary aim
is to ensure the peaceful and smooth conduct of the census, tentatively slated
for November 2024. The committee will work closely with the National Population
Commission (NPC) to provide security and logistical support for the exercise.

initially suspended due to security concerns and logistical issues. The NPC
said it had spent N200 billion on preparations for the census before it was
suspended.
The committee will hold its inaugural meeting
in the coming days to discuss its terms of reference and modalities for the
census. The NPC is expected to disclose its expenditure details related to the
suspended census within seven days, as ordered by a Federal High Court in
Abuja.
